I have to confess something: I am trying to lose weight for my wedding.
I know, I know … losing weight just for a singular event isn’t exactly the stuff of lifelong, healthy habits. I bought a wedding dress that fits right now and I feel amazing in it. The Fiance will gladly enter into marriage with me no matter what the scale says. Wedding days are magic and every bride is beautiful, regardless of dress size. I know these things, and I believe them whole-heartedly. But losing enough weight to require my dress being taken in wouldn’t be so bad either.
I’ve been working on making my life healthier now so that I can have a long and happy life with The Fiance. I’m following the South Beach Diet and stepping up the old exercise. I’m not putting a number on what I want to lose over next year. Let’s face it, the human body is flipping weird and I can’t really control what that number will be. What I can control is simple: what I eat and how much I move.
For that reason, I have set a goal for 2010 to run a 5k. Ohhhh boy am I not a runner. I’ve always admired runners and people who do road races. A friend from college recently completed a 100-mile super race in California and I spent about an hour staring at her facebook pictures, slack-jawed and awestruck. A 5k is nothing in comparison, what’s 3.2 miles anyway?
Admittedly, I am just a bad runner. I enjoy exercise, but have no stamina or form whatsoever when it comes to jogging. I’ve wanted to do a race for quite some time, but never quite knew where to start. I’ve attempted Couch to 5k a dozen times, but the program has never sparked me. A friend offered to help me train instead, and I gladly accepted. She’s starting me with brisk walking and we’re working up from there. My goal by the end of next week is a 17 minute mile. I can totally do that.
As proof that I am not just talking the talk about this goal, I have already signed up (and paid money!) for a 5k in Kansas City in April. I have friends there who will hold me accountible and make me show up. And don’t worry, I’ll be keeping you updated on my progress as well.
So here’s to being a healthier (and possibly skinnier) bride!
What are your 2010 goals? What are you doing to become the healthiest wife you can be?
