How to Find Vintage Books for Centerpieces Under $1

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
If you’re a DIY bride like me, I’m sure you’ve oohed and ahhed over centerpieces featuring books, like this one seen on OnceWed.com:

I finally found a really great resource for finding vintage books in one shopping trip without having to run around to rummage sales, Goodwill or raiding my friends’ collections: Half Price Books. Guitar Fred loves this national chain of secondhand and discount books, and he encouraged me to ask the buyers if they had any cheap vintage books they’d typically recycle. I was skeptical, but asked nonetheless. To my surprise, the buyer informed me that HPB offers “Books by the Yard” — old Reader’s Digests and other hardcover books that real estate agents typically buy to stage homes for sale. After handpicking books with pretty covers, I bought a box of 25 books for $20 (they quoted me $17 at first but the price went up starting today). I couldn’t believe how nice the books were considering they were published more than 35 years ago. To find a Half-price Books store near you, click here.

I did a trial run with all the elements I’ve collected recently to get a sense on my progress to date. Forgive me for the lack of flowers in the photo below — I plan to use hydrangeas and ranunculus in the real thing.  Also, see below on the bargains I found at Target!

This week, Target held a 75% off sale of holiday items. I snatched up about 13 of the 12″ tall silver pillar candle holders seen below (originally $12.99 each, and at discount, $3.25 each). I also took advantage of the $1 price for thirteen 5×7″ photo frames that I will either put menus or table numbers into. Total price: $55.25

Rainbow

So I came across this wonderful photo on Dante Williams Photography and I just had to share. Courtney and Grady (well maybe Courtney) decided to let her bridesmaids wear different color dresses.

I’ve seen this done before, only in photos and never in person, but this by far is the best way to do it.

All the girls have on the same dress just different colors/hues. Gotta love the David’s Bridal dress (it’s the one with the pockets I think.)

The guys even matched the girls’ dresses. How cool is that?

Let Them Eat Cake…from Publix?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009
This past Saturday, my mother and I ventured over to the grand opening of our neighborhood Publix. I have known for awhile now that they do wedding cakes and have even seen/heard several brides talk about them. I had kind of brushed it aside assuming that a grocery store’s cakes could never compare to a baker’s wedding cake, especially if they specialize in that style. But, I think I might have been wrong. [yes, I am capable of admitting that.]

While at the grand opening {which we attended at lunch time}, we got many a sample. The first one we got was from the bakery. Now, I love raspberries…a lot. They taste very good when paired with a vanilla or creme cake. At Publix, I got to try a piece of their Raspberry Decadence cake. I think I died a little when I put it into my mouth. The cake was soft and moist; the icing was smooth and did not taste like crunchy sugar; and the raspberry filling added that little something extra that all cakes need.

I didn’t even need a second bite to know that I was absolutely sold on this cake. Not only did I enjoy eating this cake, but it met all the criteria that my FI and I had agreed upon back in May when we first got engaged. [oh, yes. we knew from the start that we wanted raspberry filling and a vanilla or lemon cake!] Well, on Sunday, I finally approached the topic with him. I basically told him that I had found our wedding cake and at a, hopefully, decent rate. I showed him all the styles we could choose from, and, almost immediately, we both picked the same one.

We’re not fans of square cakes, but I think that even if all the layers were round cakes, it would still look pretty elegant and classy. And, if we have a Friday wedding, which is what we’re planning for now, then it’ll look really nice in the hall with the white textured walls and the amber colored ceiling wood beams.
Have your heard anything about Publix cakes?
What are your experiences with them?
Does anyone have any pricing information?
[as a note:: this is not a sponsored/compensated post. no money/product was given in exchange for advertisement.]

A Teaching Moment

Ladies, when your man proposed, did you take the ring from him and put it on yourself? Or, did you let him put it on for you?
If you let him put it on for you, stop and think for a moment.
Did he struggle?
Did your finger hurt afterward?
Don’t worry.
Mine did too.
Since that fateful moment, I’ve been on a mission to help my man learn how to put on rings and how to take them off…without causing pain.
My beau tends to pull rings off holding the top and bottom of the ring.

I don’t know about you ladies, but that’s nearly impossible on my finger.
Whenever he does it, I just laugh while he fights with it.
After he’s given up on that technique, he tries taking it off by pulling on the sides.

This is slightly more plausible but tends to cause more pain than his first technique.
This is usually when I get frustrated and pull my hand away.
I then show him how to take it off and how to put it back on.
I tell him {over and over again} that you have to push from the bottom that way the ring fits over the knuckle and will stay in place [forever].
After all, this is important information for the wedding day. I’d hate to be standing on the alter awkwardly while he tried to get the ring on my finger. Best to practice now!
Have you had some teaching moments where your groom just doesn’t get it?

Reception Dilemma…RESOLVED!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

We FINALLY have a reception venue! {Cut to image of me doing a happy dance!}

For those who read my earlier post on Weddzilla, we chose {drum roll…please}: Location One – The FireView.

To recap: It’s contemporary, in downtown DC {near Gallery Place & Chinatown…aka, DC’s wannabe Times Square}, near the DC City Museum and my FAVORITE Smithsonian museum – The National Portrait Gallery {can you say a plethora of photo ops?}.

Unique features? Fireplace, beautiful art glass, and tons of natural light {it looks like a greenhouse from the outside}. I found it on a whim. I was dining out at a neighboring restaurant and stumbled upon it! My only compromise? I had to lose my original blue-focused color scheme since the FireView’s color scheme includes colors are traditionally associated with fire and Fall…red, orange, yellow, brown {that’s it in the photo above}. At first, I didn’t want “traditional” fall colors or the have it in a hotel {the restaurant is in The Renaissance Washington DC Hotel}, but I let that go based on the FireView hitting all of our other important factors:
  • Must be in DC – not the ‘burbs – and close to the ceremony location {it’s a 10 minute drive, literally a straight shot with one left turn into the parking garage}
  • Must have tasty American food and contemporary decor
  • Must have natural light and unique features
  • Must haveplenty of parking
  • Must be within our budget

With this location, we are able to shave several thousand dollars {I repeat, several THOUSAND dollars} off of our reception budget… For that, I think I can compromise and come up with colors that will compliment both the space and our wedding day vision. At the end of the day, we want our wedding to be special, but we also want to do it without breaking the bank.

The FireView is where we will have cocktails and dancing, the second photo is where we will have dinner. There is tile and hardwood floors throughout so no dance floor required and we are doing a total buy-out so the entire restaurant is ours for the evening. No need for rentals because, the price includes upgraded linens {it pays to ask!}. We get the vibe we wanted with the service, support and experience of a hotel chain {not to mention Marriott rewards points towards our honeymoon!}. Imagine this room with the furniture reconfigured, with upgraded linen, bathed in candlelight.

Now that that’s done…I can focus on {stress over?} the other 2,000+ details!
